Vibram sole protectors shoes in Ho Chi Minh City

A Vibram sole protector - cobblers call it a topy pad - is a layer of rubber bonded over the original sole, so that layer wears instead of the sole itself and the shoe grips better. The original sole stays intact, and when the pad wears out you simply replace it. 550,000d a pair.

A pair of heels after a black Vibram pad: the rubber follows the shape of the sole and the edge is trimmed flush, so it reads as the original.

Topy, ordinary rubber or Vibram

The three names get used interchangeably, but they differ in the rubber itself and in thickness:

Thin topy pad

Soft rubber 1-1.5 mm thick and cheap. It suits thin-soled high heels and shoes you rarely wear, but it wears out sooner.

Ordinary rubber

Thicker, but generic rubber that hardens after a few months and loses its tread early.

Vibram rubber

Rubber made for shoe soles: springy, grippy, and the tread lasts. This is what the workshop uses, 550,000d a pair.

Which shoes we fit them to

Sole protectors for leather-soled dress shoes and loafers

High heels with a bare leather sole, scuffed and dirty

A leather sole slips on wet floors and wears fast at the toe; a rubber layer solves both. This is the group where it pays off most: a new leather sole costs 300,000d - 850,000d, while a pad is 550,000d and can be replaced over and over with the original sole still underneath.

Sole protectors for high heels and red soles

A Vibram sole protector fitted to red-soled high heels

High heels wear through fastest, because your whole weight lands on a tiny area. Red soles have a second problem: the red finish rubs off after a few outings, and repainting never matches the original. A thin pad over the contact area keeps the original colour, while the red rim and the heel stay visible. If the heel tip has worn down on one side we redo it at the same time, see high heel repair.

Sole protectors for designer shoes and new sneakers

The more a pair cost, the sooner it should get a pad, while the tread is still untouched. The rubber sits between the original sole and the road, so later on you only replace the pad instead of the sole. On limited editions, an untouched original sole also holds the resale value. Protector or resole

A pad is rubber bonded over the original sole, for when the sole is still good and you want to keep it - 550,000d. A resole means taking the old sole off entirely and fitting a new one, for when the sole is worn through, cracked or badly uneven - 300,000d - 850,000d. How to read the wear on your own soles is covered in worn soles: patch or resole.

When a pad is not the answer

If the sole is worn through or badly worn on one side, the surface is no longer flat enough to bond to. A sole that has come unglued has to be re-glued to the upper first, see regluing a separated shoe sole. Badminton and pickleball shoes need a proper non-marking sole, see pickleball & badminton shoe resoling; and on carbon-plated racing shoes, added rubber changes the feel underfoot, see running shoe repair.

How the technician fits it

Inspect the sole, measure how much thickness is left and quote. Clean and abrade the sole so the adhesive grips - this step decides whether the pad lasts. Cut the rubber to the shape of each sole, apply the proper adhesive, let it tack off and press it in a machine so it bonds evenly with no air pockets. Finally trim the edge, finish it, repaint the sole rim and clean the shoes before they go back.

Quick answers about Vibram sole protectors

How much does a Vibram sole protector cost?

550,000d a pair in Vibram rubber. The price is fixed once the technician has seen the sole, since some pairs need work on the sole first. If the shoes are worth less than the job, the technician says so plainly.

What is the difference between a topy pad and a Vibram pad?

The same job: rubber bonded over the original sole. The difference is the rubber. A thin topy pad costs less but wears out sooner and tends to harden; Vibram rubber is thicker, springier and keeps its tread longer, which suits shoes you wear every day.

Does the extra layer make the shoes heavier or taller?

The rubber is thin, so the shoes are only slightly heavier and thicker. Most people notice no difference wearing them; on thin-soled heels you feel it a little for the first few steps.

Will a pad hide the red sole on my heels?

It covers only the contact area at the forefoot; the red rim around it and the heel stay visible. Choose beige rubber, or red rubber close to the sole, and it shows even less.

Can sports shoes have a sole protector?

Yes, on everyday shoes with a reasonably flat sole. On carbon-plated racing shoes the workshop advises against a full pad; badminton and pickleball shoes need a proper non-marking sole, which is a different job.

How long does a pad last?

It depends how much you walk and on what; a lot of walking on concrete wears it faster than office days. Once the tread has gone smooth, bring the shoes in for a new layer rather than letting it wear through to the sole.

My soles are already worn - can a pad still save them?

If the wear is even and the surface is still flat, yes. Worn through, badly worn on one side, or a sole that has come unglued has to be dealt with first - a resole or re-gluing - before any pad goes on.

Where do I send shoes for a sole protector?

Bring them to the workshop at 1/56 Nguyen The Truyen, Tan Son Nhi, Tan Phu, or choose door-to-door pickup when you book; we collect in every district of Ho Chi Minh City. From other provinces, send them by courier. The technician gives you a turnaround time along with the quote.

Send a photo of the sole and we will quote first

Photograph the sole of your shoes and send it to Zalo 0388665129, or attach it when you book - the technician can see how much sole is left and say in advance whether a pad or a resole is the answer.
