Cleaning Louis Vuitton bags: canvas, vachetta leather and painted edges

In short: a Louis Vuitton bag combines three materials that are handled quite differently on the same piece: coated canvas, untreated vachetta leather and painted edges. Scrub the canvas and the pattern fades; wet the vachetta and it stains, and both faults are harder to fix than the dirt you started with.

This article goes part by part over the bag, saying plainly what you can wipe yourself and what is better left to a technician. For the full service and pricing see bag cleaning. Foxpro is an independent service provider and is not an authorised dealer for any brand mentioned in this article.

Three materials on one bag

Monogram and Damier canvas

The body is fabric under a thin water-resistant coating, and the pattern sits on that coating. So the canvas takes a damp cloth but not circular scrubbing or a stiff brush: a few dozen passes and the print starts to fade, which cannot be undone. The dirtiest areas are usually the bottom corners and the area beside the handles, where hands touch every day.

Vachetta leather

The handles, flap and pale tan trim are untreated leather. It darkens over time, which is normal patina. Trouble starts when it meets water or sweat unevenly: the wet patch darkens into a mark and stays there permanently if nothing is done. Never wipe vachetta with a soaking cloth, and never use alcohol.

Edges and stitching

Cut leather edges are sealed with edge paint, usually red or brown. This layer flexes and rubs daily, so it cracks and peels before anything else, most of all on the strap.

Lining

Depending on the model the lining is fabric, suede or coated material. The lining collects dust, paper crumbs and cosmetic marks, and it is also where mould appears first when a bag has sat in a cupboard.

Clasps and metal details

Gold plating dulls from sweat and cosmetics. When the leather beside it is worked, the metal has to be masked off, because a leather solution can attack the plating.

Common faults, part by part

  • Water marks on vachetta: the most common fault, after rain or after wiping with too wet a cloth.
  • Dark, scuffed bottom corners: from standing the bag on the floor regularly.
  • Cracked, peeling edges: most obvious on the strap.
  • Cracked or broken handles: vachetta left dry for years without conditioning.
  • Torn lining and lingering smells: bags used for years or stored somewhere damp.
  • A jammed zip: dust and residue caught in the teeth.

How far you can wipe at home

  1. Empty the bag, turn out the lining if you can, and vacuum with a small nozzle.
  2. Wipe the canvas with a well wrung microfibre cloth, in one direction, never circular.
  3. Blot dry straight away with a clean cloth, leaving no water sitting in the stitching.
  4. Only dust the vachetta dry. If it already has a dark mark, stop there: do not rub it and do not try to bleach it.
  5. Pack with white paper to hold the shape and store in the fabric dust bag, never a plastic bag.

Frequently asked questions

How much does cleaning a Louis Vuitton bag cost?

Designer bags are priced in the Luxury tier at 600,000d – 900,000d, depending on size and condition. The price is confirmed once the technician has seen the actual bag.

Can water marks on vachetta be removed?

Fresh marks can be evened out considerably. An old mark that has soaked in usually means bringing the whole leather panel to one tone through colour restoration, rather than treating that one mark.

Does cleaning fade the Monogram pattern?

No, with the right pressure and the right solution. The pattern only fades from repeated hard scrubbing or strong solvents, which is why the technician tests on the base first.

Where do I send the bag and how long does it take?

Bring it to the shop at 1/56 Nguyen The Truyen, Tan Son Nhi, Tan Phu, open 8:00 to 18:00 every day, or book a slot and we collect it anywhere in Ho Chi Minh City. Turnaround depends on the material and condition; the technician tells you with the quote.
