GG Supreme canvas
The fabric carries a printed coating: fine with a damp cloth, not with hard scrubbing. Repeated circular rubbing fades the print, and a faded patch has to be painted back rather than cleaned.
Quilted calf leather
The Marmont line and other quilted models use soft calf leather that marks easily and fades at corners, edges and wherever the strap rests. The quilting stitches stand proud, so dust settles along them and the leather must be worked along the stitching, never across it.
The green and red stripe
The woven stripe is the part most likely to bleed when it meets water or a strong solution. Each colour band is worked separately and blotted dry immediately, never left damp where two colours meet.
Clasps and gold-plated details
The double G logo and plated clasps dull from sweat and cosmetics. Polishing them is done separately with the leather beside them masked off, because metal polish stains leather.
Common faults
- Dark, scuffed bottom corners: from standing the bag on floors and tables regularly.
- Faded colour along leather edges and corners: most obvious on pink, beige and pale blue bags.
- Patches of faded pattern: usually from hard scrubbing or wipes containing alcohol.
- Mould on the trim and base: after the rainy season, common on bags kept in sealed boxes.
- Dull plating with stained patches: built up over a few years of use.
How far you can wipe at home
- Empty the bag and vacuum the lining and the stitching lines.
- Wipe GG Supreme canvas with a well wrung microfibre cloth, in one direction, blotting dry straight away.
- On quilted calf leather, wipe gently along the stitching, never across it and never with a brush.
- Metal clasps get a dry wipe with a soft cloth only. Retail metal polish easily stains thin plating.
- Store in the fabric dust bag, packed with white paper, away from sealed damp boxes.
