What edge paint is
When leather is cut to make a bag, the raw edge shows its fibres. The maker coats it with edge paint so it is sealed, smooth and the same colour as the bag. You find it on handles, flaps, the body and on leather wallets too, usually in red, brown or black.
Why edges peel
- Constant flexing: straps and flaps bend every time the bag is used, so the paint hardens and develops fine cracks.
- Friction: edges rub against clothes and furniture, especially at the bottom corners.
- Heat and humidity: leaving a bag in a car boot or a hot room softens the paint until it turns sticky or runs.
- Thin original paint: many bags have thin edge paint that peels early even with careful use.
Can you touch it up at home
One or two small scuffs can be touched up temporarily with retail edge paint, dabbed thinly right where it has peeled. But once the edge has long cracks or is coming off in pieces, painting over the old layer leaves it lumpy and it peels again quickly, because the new paint sticks to the failed layer rather than to the leather.
Avoid nail polish or marker pens: the colour will not match, they dry hard and crack, and they make proper repainting harder later.
Edge repainting at the shop
- Photograph the condition, tag the bag and quote.
- Remove the cracked old paint, keeping only what is still firmly bonded.
- Smooth the leather edge so the new layer sits tight.
- Mix a colour to match the original edge and apply several thin coats, drying between each.
- Finish the surface smooth and check against the arrival photos before handover.

Making edges last
- Do not leave the bag in a car boot or in hot sun.
- Do not fold the handles tightly for storage; stuff paper inside to keep the body in shape.
- Avoid setting the bag on rough surfaces; the bottom corners wear fastest.
