Cleaning designer shoes: done by hand, detail by detail

In short: designer shoes are not different because the solutions cost more, they are different because the work is slow, tested in a hidden spot first, and the original colour layer is kept. One mistake on a pair worth tens of millions cannot be undone.

Customers sending designer shoes always ask the same thing: is it safe. This article sets out the steps a pair goes through, where the risk sits and how the price is worked out. For the wider service see shoe cleaning.

What makes designer shoes different

Three things. First, one shoe usually combines several materials: printed canvas, calf leather, suede, plated metal and a leather sole, each needing its own method. Second, the colour and surface coating are thin, so hard rubbing takes off the colour rather than the dirt. Third, the value: if it is ruined, nothing makes up for it.

So the rule here is to do the least that gets the result, not the most the material can take.

The pairs customers send most are Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Dior and Hermes, alongside limited edition sneakers. Real results on each pair are at before and after photos.

The materials you meet most often

Printed canvas

The pattern sits in a printed layer on the surface of the fabric. Circular rubbing or a stiff brush fades it. Work in one direction, with light pressure, blotting straight after.

Soft calf leather

The easiest material to mark. Never soaked, never cleaned with alcohol. Cleaned with a leather cleanser, then conditioned so it does not crack along the creases.

Suede and nubuck

It hates water. Cleaned dry with a dedicated brush, oil marks treated separately, and the nap brushed back up at the end for an even colour.

Patent leather

A glossy surface scratches easily and picks up colour transferred from other items. Wipe it with a soft cloth and never use a solution with abrasive particles.

Metal and buckles

Gold or silver plating is polished separately and masked off while the leather beside it is worked, because a leather solution can dull the plating.

Leather and PU soles

A leather sole absorbs water, so it is wiped, never rinsed. A light PU sole tends to grow mould along the edge after the rainy season, and that is treated with its own solution before the general clean.

The risk of doing it at home

  • Alcohol and bleach: they strip the finish colour and leave uneven pale patches.
  • A soaking cloth on leather: water follows the stitching into the lining and leaves tide marks once dry.
  • Circular rubbing on printed fabric: it fades the pattern, and that cannot be brought back.
  • Sun drying to speed things up: the leather shrinks and fades, and the glue softens.
  • Old newspaper as a shoe tree: the ink transfers into a light coloured lining.

How Foxpro handles designer shoes

  1. Booking in and tagging: every pair is photographed as it arrives and given its own tracking code.
  2. Testing the solution in a hidden spot: inside the tongue or behind the heel, watching the reaction before the whole shoe is touched.
  3. Quoting first: we name each item, what will come clean and what will not. The technician starts only once you agree.
  4. Working by hand, detail by detail: separated by material, with metal parts and printed areas masked off.
  5. Conditioning, reshaping and handover: checked against the arrival photos before the shoes go back.

You can follow the progress with your order code at order tracking. Real results on shoes customers have sent are at before and after photos.

When cleaning is not enough

Some faults cleaning cannot fix: colour worn off the toe, peeling edges, a sole worn smooth, or burst stitching. Those belong to shoe repair, done once the shoes are clean. For mould deep in suede, read mouldy shoes first to see how much can be saved.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to send designer shoes?

Every pair is photographed as it arrives and given its own code, worked by hand one pair at a time, with the solution tested in a hidden spot first. You compare the arrival photos when you collect them.

How is a designer shoe spa different from ordinary cleaning?

The difference is in the work, not the name: slower, separated by material, keeping the original colour layer and the patina instead of making everything look new.

Can colour bleeding be fixed?

Colour that has transferred from outside usually comes off. Original colour that has worn away needs a touch-up, which is restoration rather than cleaning.

How long does it take and where do I send them?

Normally 3 to 4 days. The shop is at 1/56 Nguyen The Truyen, Tan Son Nhi, Tan Phu, open 8:00 to 18:00 every day. You can also book a slot and we collect the shoes anywhere in Ho Chi Minh City.
