That is mould. The good news is that most cases can be saved. The bad news is that the longer you wait, the smaller the chance, and some popular online fixes ruin shoes faster than the mould itself.<\/p>\n<p>This article helps you work out how bad your pair is, how much you can fix yourself, and when to take it to a shop. Shoes have all three. Sweat and dirt in the insole are the food, a closed box is the darkness, and Saigon air in the rainy season is always humid.<\/p>\n<p>The three most common situations:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Storing shoes before they are fully dry<\/strong> after walking in the rain or washing them.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Keeping them in a cardboard box or plastic bag<\/strong> for months without opening it.<\/li>\n<li><strong>A shoe cabinet pushed against the wall<\/strong> or kept in the bathroom, where it is humid all year round.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>How bad is your pair<\/h2>\n<p>Before doing anything, look closely to see which kind you are dealing with. The fabric fibres and leather grain have been stained from within.<\/p>\n<h2>Treating light mould at home<\/h2>\n<p>If your pair has surface mould or light clinging mould, follow these steps in order:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Take the shoes outside before brushing.<\/strong> Brushing indoors sends mould spores everywhere and onto other things. Wear a mask.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dry-brush the surface mould<\/strong> with a soft-bristled brush.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Wipe with white vinegar diluted one to one with water<\/strong>, using a cloth wrung out very well. Vinegar kills the spores without eating into the material like bleach does.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Leave to dry somewhere airy, in the shade.<\/strong> No harsh sun, no heat drying.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Take the insoles out and dry them separately<\/strong>, since the insole is usually where the mould is worst.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Always test any solution on a hidden spot first, especially on coloured leather and light-coloured shoes.<\/p>\n<h2>Treatment by material<\/h2>\n<h3>Fabric and canvas shoes<\/h3>\n<p>They tolerate water, so they are the easiest. After wiping with vinegar, you can wash them gently with a neutral soap. If black spots remain, the mould has stained the fibres, and that part needs a separate stain removal process.<\/p>\n<h3>Smooth leather shoes<\/h3>\n<p>Do not soak. Wipe with diluted vinegar, let dry, then <strong>always condition the leather again<\/strong>, because the vinegar and the cleaning strip away some of the natural oils in the leather. Skip conditioning and the leather will dry out and crack within a few weeks.<\/p>\n<h3>Suede and nubuck<\/h3>\n<p>This is the hardest material. The velvety surface absorbs moisture, and water mats the fibres for good. Only dry-brush with a dedicated suede brush and use a damp cloth very gently. If the mould has spread into patches, do not try it yourself; you are likely to leave water marks that are harder to fix than the mould. PU soles need more care: long-standing mould can make the PU crumble. If it feels soft or spongy when pressed, or shows small cracks, the problem is no longer cleaning but a damaged sole.<\/p>\n<h2>What to avoid<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Laundry bleach.<\/strong> It kills mould but yellows fabric, fades leather and makes glue brittle. It creates new damage that cannot be undone.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Drying in harsh sun to speed things up.<\/strong> Leather shrinks and cracks, and the sole glue weakens.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Using a hair dryer or leaving them next to the stove.<\/strong> Same reasons, only worse.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Spraying perfume or deodoriser to mask the smell.<\/strong> The smell goes for a while, but the mould lives on underneath and comes back.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>When to bring it to the shop<\/h2>\n<p>Send them to a shop if any of these apply:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Suede or nubuck shoes with patches of mould.<\/li>\n<li>Black spots remain after wiping with vinegar.<\/li>\n<li>Luxury shoes or a pair you treasure that you do not want to risk.<\/li>\n<li>Mould inside the insole and cushioning too, with a smell that stays after days of airing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>At Foxpro, light to moderate mould is covered by our <strong>deep cleaning package at 150,000d<\/strong>: killing the mould, cleaning, conditioning and reshaping.
